DC brings forth a new face for Batman. This time Robert Pattinson takes the stage as Gotham’s savior and wows audiences all over the globe. Even though the pandemic had thrown everything off schedule, DC was able to drop a trailer a few days back, putting everyone on the edge of their seats. So here we are, attempting to break down the 2:23 clip and see what we can uncover about the upcoming movie.
Directed by Matt Reeves, the movie is set out to be released October of 2021. Spooky time of the year deserves a spooky movie, right? Absolutely! Even though there are not too many details known to be public about the plot of the movie, we can still derive some key points from the trailer itself.
As usual, Gotham is swarming with unstoppable crime and a notorious group of individuals set their sights on Batman. The overall progression of the movie starts on that note. When looking at the caped crusader himself, he is apparently only 2 years into his career as Batman, as mentioned by Matt Reeves. Hence, Bruce Wayne hasn’t completely delved into the character he is seen to be in some of the existing films. This notion did however raise some question of the actual timeline of the movie. Although some had speculated that the film had been set in the 1990s, that assumption was quickly debunked when the presence of smartphones was speculated in the trailer. The movie is however most likely set in the 21st century, so those craving a Batman movie set in the 90s can simply revisit the pre-existing movies that we love so much.
Moving onto the some of the new characters and actors we meet in the trailer. Robert Pattinson is obviously taking on role of Bruce Wayne. We see the actor in a different light with high hopes and expectations. The Ex-“Twilight’s shiny vampire” knocked out the competition which included Jack Reynor, Alexander Ludwig, Jack O’Connell, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Armie Hammer and Nicholas Hoult, securing himself for the lead role. Robert Pattinson was also director Matt Reeves’ top choice.
James Gordon is now covered by Golden Globe winner Jeffrey Wright while Zoe Kravitz takes over the role of Catwoman. Our beloved Alfred is to be played by the dynamic, pleasantly eccentric MoCap actor and performance artist, Andy Serkis. Reeves stresses here once again that the characters have not yet developed themselves. So, for instance, Selina Kyle is not yet fully Catwoman but merely in the initial days of her “career”. The characters grow with the cinema progression itself and merge themselves more seamlessly with the personas they choose to become. We also quite prominently notice The Riddler and The Penguin in the trailer, who are also early into their criminal career, played by Golden Globe nominated Paul Dano and Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell, respectively.
The overall theme of the movie seems to be quintessential DC, adorning the whole scenes with dark and eerie vibes combined with slow, deep music. Also interesting to note that Nirvana’s “Something in the Way” plays throughout the whole trailer, which may indicate something about the tentative soundtrack of the movie? Maybe, or maybe not! There is so much left unsaid.
The fight scene at the very end of the trailer really entices all the action fans out there with hopes that scenes like those will not be anomalies. We all love some good old-fashioned action sequences, and it would be that much more enticing with the rebooted Batman.
Okay so let’s address the elephant in the room. If you’ve seen the trailer, what exactly do YOU think of our new caped crusader being played by Robert Pattinson? If you haven’t, what are you waiting for? In case you did, you will surely notice the slightly unkempt and messy Bruce Wayne. This is hardly what we all noticed in the previous Batman movies, fashioning a posh and polished Bruce in all his glory, but it definitely promises to enthrall our senses (especially thanks to the beat ‘em up attitude we noticed).
“Without being an origin story for him, it’s something that touches upon his origins,” Reeves said. Maybe this new version of Bruce Wayne will shine light on some of the other aspects to be uncovered about Batman’s life.
Matt Reeves has said that the Batman comic “The Long Halloween” was used as a major influence for the film, including parts of the detective story and the extensive use of Batman’s rogue gallery. The detective work of Batman will be the primary focus of the plot while also bringing in elements of Bruce Wayne’s past, the rumored 6 villains and the growth of Batman as a character. A perfect harmony of all.
Some of the other new and exciting things we get to see in the trailer includes the new Bat suit and the Batmobile. The images of the Bat suit were leaked earlier this year, engrossing fans with that lionizing logo on the chest. As for the Batmobile, it is a full-on customized muscle car that pays homage to the 1970s car driven by Neal Adams, which he drove for stealth purposes, making it a fairly regular looking car. Practically, this car is more useful for the caped crusader and Reeves must have noticed that!
Overall, the trailer was nothing short of intriguing for fans and even for general audiences everywhere. The Batman poses no threats to the DC Fandom in general, as it aims to please anyone who has been looking forward to a solid, mature and genuinely captivating Dark Knight movie, that can make anyone slip up and say “I’m vengeance” instead of the more widely beloved “I’m Batman”.
