During the deadly showcase of the horrific pandemic outside, it was hard for the people of earth to keep calm in their homes. Thanks to the binge-worthy shows of Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Disney+, our lockdown days went a little more bearable. These shows brought the altered reality to our sluggish couch selves. As the year is about to end, here’s a flashback to the top 6 best shows of 2020.
When adventures out of home were restricted, “The Boys” came as a savior for the rugged ones. The show’s first season was already out with enough hype. The second season came exactly in time. The show mainly deals with superheroes, well, with a twist. The superheroes use their powers to oppress others. Now it is on The Boys to defeat the superheroes and save the day.
The first season of “The Boys” was fulfilling in its own way. But the conflict continues in season 2. There are three estimated seasons of the show. The critics say that the show makers were able to hold up the audience’s enthusiasm in this season too. By the time all the eight episodes wrap up, there’s already a bloodbath going on. Too many gruesome injuries, deaths, and outright massacres will be attracting the attention of the viewers.
“The Boys” Season 2 premieres its first three episodes on September 4, 2020, on Amazon Prime Video, right when the pandemic was hitting its nerve-ending toll. The show concluded on October 9 with a season finale. The show got much appreciation from the viewers.
Better Call Saul
One of the good things that happened in 2020 is the transformation of Jimmy into Saul Goodman. “Better Call Saul” is a prequel of the already famous “Breaking Bad” series. This year the fifth season of the show came out. Hopes and expectations from the show were already high, and just so you know, the show can hold up the reputation. It has already completed 5 seasons and the fame is pretty good till now. The next season will be the last one.
The fifth season is a continuation of the fourth one where Saul Goodman just got his law license back. The season is set five years prior to when he meets Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. The whole season revolves around the evolution of Jimmy into the titular character, criminal defense lawyer Saul Goodman.
AMC television series Better Call Saul premiered on February 23, 2020, in America. The last episode of the series came out on April 20, 2020. Only ten episodes of the series were enough to demonstrate what the show makers wanted to say. The audience loved the show; their expectation for the final season is high as the sky.
Mystery, history, science: the most perfect combination of these three can be found in the third season of “Dark”. The setting of the show expands from far past to far future. “The end is the beginning, and the beginning is the end” saying this, the show makers puzzled the viewers of this show. The series finale of the show came as a key that untangled all the knots building around the lives of Jonas and Martha.
“Dark” is the first German-language show on Netflix. The first season aired in 2017, since then there has been much talk on the table regarding this show. It starts with the mystery of a lost boy in an eerie town which leads to a series of incidents, none thought could happen. The final season of the show resolves all those mysteries and brings it to a fitting ending.
27 June 2020 is the date when the final season of the show aired on Netflix. Eight episodes in total summed up the whole show. Ironically, the audience got to know in the last season that the only way to untangle the knot is to destroy it.
The Queen’s Gambit
“The Queen’s Gambit” would be the perfect show for everyone to watch this lockdown. The setting of the show matches perfectly with the unemployed state of mind, people had in the pandemic. An intellectual’s choice, “The Queen’s Gambit” is an adaptation of Walter Tevis’s 1983 novel “The Queen’s Gambit”.
The series aired on October 23, 2020. Only in the span of four weeks, it became Netflix’s most-watched scripted miniseries. The story revolves around a chess mastermind who is walking up to her stairs of success all the while dealing with drug and alcohol dependency.
Only the first season of the series came out and the show got much appreciation. It has received critical acclaim for Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance as Beth Harmon. The cinematography and production values were much appreciated too. But the greatest achievement of the show is it got positive reviews from the chess community.
Others might have the worst lockdown in 2020 but for the Star Wars fan, the year was not that bad. And the only reason behind this is they got to see “The Child” again. You guessed it right, the second season of “The Mandalorian” came out this year.
To add spices to the dish, “The Mandalorian” stars Pedro Pascal as the title character, a bounty hunter trying to return “The Child” to its home. People’s favorite actor saving people’s favorite character is something Star Wars fans needed to watch in the gloomy lockdown days.
The development of the second season started in July 2019. The filming took place from October 2019 to March 2020. Due to COVID-19, the post-production works were due. But finally, after completing remote post-production of the series Disney+ aired “The Mandalorian” on 30 October. The audience loved it even though the third season of the series is already announced.
If you have a knack for the Royal family then “The Crown” might have saved your lockdown days. The whole show is based on the lives of the British Royals. The fourth season of the series came out this November. The show is a huge success from the very first season. The fourth one dwells around the life of the iconic Princess Diana.
The emergence of Princess Diana caused much hype for the show. The audience waited eagerly to watch the live version of the persona they admire so much. Apparently, it may seem that the story of the show is presumably, but the screenplay and execution of the entire show made it different from the contemporary. 15 November 2020 is the date when Netflix aired the first episode of the fourth season.
There is much talk about the upcoming seasons of the show. The maker of the show, Peter Morgan first announced that it would be better for the show to wrap it up in five seasons. But while planning the fifth season he realized without a sixth season there’d be injustice with the show. However, that might work out, the audience would not be able to get a glimpse of the present-day Royals on the screen.
Joey Tribbiani in the second season of F.R.I.E.N.D.S said, “Inside good, outside bad.” Who would have thought this quote can seem so literal in 2020. The only thing that made this inside home A.K.A new normal good is the shows. Sometimes it is needed to indulge in man-made reality to get hold of the cruel reality. These shows did the same to us and the people of earth are grateful to our lockdown heroes.
